Originally built as a private dwelling house, parts of this fine building date back centuries. Tastefully extended over the years, it is unclear when the dwelling house became an inn, although The Cobham is known to have been licensed before 1816. At one time the inn stood directly on the old Great North Road, although the construction of a St Neots bypass has now given the inn a more tranquil position, as befits its rural origins.

In the golden age of the stagecoach, Cobham was a haven of rest and sustenance for weary travellers, with its inviting log fire in winter and its fine garden in summer. The stagecoach, pulled by four horses, carried up to eight passengers squashed tightly together inside, with “outsiders”on the roof charged at a cheaper rate having no protection from the elements they appreciated the warm welcome awaiting them at The Cobham.
